March 8, 2007 ~ Following the Bardho Kunda

Last Saturday we had our first Kunda of the year. The subject was the Bardo of Life and Death and the interval of the intermediate state. We employed dual speech in that on the level of verbal cognition we had an unfolding explanation of the Bardo Thodol. At the same time along the line of internal spiritual speech, through the power of Samadhi, through the power of the supra conscious state, we actually traversed the interval of the intermediate state, which is the state of consciousness between life and death.

This process of spiritual transformation is the same for all human beings regardless of religion, culture, time or place. It simply will dress itself up in the language of the individual according to their understanding, their belief system, and their cultural impressions. It is thus very important to have a grasp of this very dynamic moment when the arrival of the interval occurs. When understood appropriately, it guarantees liberation upon contact.

Saturday was a very dramatic day and an enormous amount of information, both internal and external was expressed, so I wanted to dedicate this session to Satsang Q & A on the Bardo Thodol. Due to the depth and intensity of this teaching, it seems that some questions may have arisen.

Question : I remember that you’ve mentioned that there’s an opportunity for you to say who your teacher was in the Bardo. When does that happen? It seemed like it was about three steps down from the first opportunity.

Mark : What you’re referring to happens in The Judgment, however the Guru appears between each of the stages of the Bardo, and at any point that you recognize the Guru you will become liberated and enlightened.

The first opportunity is the moment the symptoms of death begin to occur and the prana begins to fold in from the extremities, the heat begins to escape from the body, escape from the core, senses begin to dim, the body begins to turn to stone, the mind starts to collapse and begins to fade and the senses switch off. The dynamic of the collapse of the elements from earth into water, water into fire, fire into air, air into ether, each of which are accompanied by very loud, disconcerting and disorienting phenomenon because the senses are supported by the elements. As the senses collapse inside the architecture of the life force, one feels that one is in earthquakes, floods – there is kind of a conflagration quality as the life force and the structure of identity collapses. At this point the breath begins to fade. There will be a moment as the breath fades, where the breath will simply stop between an in-breath and an out-breath or between an out-breath and an in-breath. At that moment the Clear Light will dawn spontaneously, the very second the breath stops. That is the first opportunity to give rise to the consciousness of the Guru. Draw the Guru to the crown of the head and at the very moment that the Clear Light dawns, merge with the Guru.
